The following is a brief outline of my involvement with computing in particular VMS, and its associated hardware.
My first real computer system was a Vaxstation 3200, running VMS 4.7A. It was state of the art when I first used it – 04-Dec-1989. This was used to run CAD/CAM software.
This initial VAX was added to gradually with a VAX 3500, another 3200 and various models - including 3100 48's and so on.
My first Alpha, operating on VMS 1.5, the first implantation of VMS on the Alpha platform, was then put into the cluster, which then expanded to over 21 nodes. Some booted from their own system disks, others were configured as satellites. VMS is quite flexible and the whole cluster was configured for the maximum efficiency that the network limitation would allow.
I undertook a large amount of training with Digital as it was then, in all aspects of VMS which at the time, did not always seem relevant but in later years was invaluable in solving problems.
Since 1989 I have spent all my time on VMS. It’s hard to explain but it comes addictive after a while. This is mainly due to it’s dependability, wide scope and security features. Even the documentation has been consistent over the years as though the same person has been producing them.
It’s impossible to say you have done everything in VMS, as the scope is so wide. But I have done a vast amount but I would say that configuring clusters are the most challenging and interesting.
